KKOJ Radio, Jackson-Spirit Lake started
commercial broadcasting on July 10, 1980.
Les Kleven, owner of Kleven Broadcasting of
Minnesota, was the first voice heard on KKOJ as
he signed the station on the air at two minutes
past noon on a hot summer afternoon with the
temperature already well into the 90s.
Kleven told listeners a few items about the new
station. The station began its broadcast
activity at slightly reduced power as some
difficulties were encountered in the directional
testing, but the FCC granted the station the
authority to begin broadcasting at reduced
power.
Station manager Doug Johnson also greeted
listeners eager for a daily news source in
Jackson County, and Dave Maschoff gave the first
newscast on the new station.
Johnson has been with the station since its
inception. Maschoff took a tour of duty in the
Black Hills of South Dakota, but returned to his
broadcasting roots in November of 1995.
1190 KKOJ AM has a "Hot Country" music
format.
We offer complete local news, weather, sports
and ag information, and are the only source of
daily information in Jackson County.
We are second to none in our dedication to area
business and industry and its importance to our
area economy.
KKOJ is an affiliate of the Linder Farm Network,
the top farm network in the state.
KKOJ's signal can be heard in about 20 counties
in southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and
southeastern South Dakota. |
